Sonja Peters Obituary

In Loving Memory of Sonja Elizabeth Peters

Sonja Elizabeth Peters, 82, of Danbury passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2025, at Notre Dame Health and Rehabilitation Center in Norwalk Connecticut. She was born on September 23, 1943, the daughter of Swedish immigrants, Thure and Anna (Olson) Pearson of Georgetown, CT. Sonja took great pride in her Swedish heritage.

A vibrant spirit with a heart full of love, Sonja lived life on her own terms. She was sassy, strong-willed, and full of joy. She was a firecracker and tornado all in one, never one to take anything from anybody, but always giving so much of herself to others. For many years Sonja worked as a in-home caretaker in the Danbury community caring and cooking for her elderly clients, whom adored her. She loved to cook and was known for unforgettable cheesecake, Swedish meatballs and buns.

Putnam Park in Redding was a favorite place to walk and picnic with friends. It was a place that brought her serenity, peace and joy. She loved listening to Country music, especially Johnny Cash, for whom she would light right up. Sonja was a person of faith, which gave her strength through life’s most difficult times and helped her meet each day with grace and hope. Though life dealt her some very hard blows – the heart-breaking losses of her daughters, husband, parents and sisters -

Sonja found strength and solace within a strong community of friends who were her chosen family. The love and care they showed her in the later years of life brought her happiness and peace, and for that her family is eternally grateful.

The family is likewise grateful for the extraordinary care Sonja received at Notre Dame Health and Rehabilitation Center in Norwalk, CT. The Sisters and staff provided for all her needs with great compassion and dignity.

Sonja will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were lucky to know her. Her strength, humor, and kindness left a lasting mark on everyone she met. She is survived by her brother Lars and his wife, Ginny, of Dorset, VT, her son David and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Robert Peters, daughters Virginia and Margaret Johnson, parents Thure and Anna Pearson, sister Margit Moore and brother-in-law, Art Moore, and sister Shirley Sesto.

A celebration of Sonja’s life will be held on May 11, 2025 from 2-5pm at The Fellowship Center, 15 Great Pasture Road, Suite 5, Danbury, CT. All are welcome to join us in honoring a woman who was truly one of a kind.
