Sandra Ann Hughes Cher, known to her loved ones as "Sandy", passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021 at her home in North Fort Myers, Florida while surrounded by members of her loving family. The youngest child of Alice Quilty Hughes and Edward Hughes, Sandy was born on December 9, 1935 in New York City, NY. Beloved wife of the late Robert L. Cher.
As a young girl growing up in New York City, she would often ride multiple subways to arrive at a horse farm where she would clean the stables in order to ride for free. A woman of many skills; she worked as a taxi driver in NYC, a fork lift operator in Germany on a U.S. Army Base, a mental health supervisor in MA and CT, until finally attending Mattatuck Community College and graduating with her associates degree of nursing at the age of 50! She was always devoted to supporting her family, often working multiple jobs in order to make ends meet and to give her children the opportunities she believed that they deserved.
Her home on Cables Avenue in Waterbury CT at one time hosted almost the entire family, where she was an integral part of raising her grandchildren. She was always happiest when her home was filled with movement, life, and love.
In her retirement she moved to New London CT where she lived in her beloved historical Carriage House, which was built in 1904 and reminded her of the time she spent with horses as a young woman. Living by the ocean was a lifelong dream of hers, and it filled her with immense joy being able to provide seaside summers for her grandchildren filled with days at the beach, sock hop dances, and many family gatherings. She loved sitting outside in her garden breathing in the salty ocean air, watching for her favorite birds. She became a Florida resident in her later years, living out the rest of her life in the sun.
Sandy is survived by her seven children; Lawrence McCarvell, Kathleen McCarvell, Phillip McCarvell, Scott McCarvell, Jacqueline McCarvell German (husband Bromley), Donald Sheppard (wife Wendy), and Kimberly Cher Pasanio (husband Shane). Five Grandchildren; Shawn McCarvell, Amanda McCarvell, Ashley McCarvell Brush (husband Mike), Patrick German, and Bethany German. Six great grandchildren; Deanna, Catera, Gabriel, Caleb, Skylar, and Corbin. As well as many close family friends. She was predeceased by her grandson Jordan McCarvell.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Friday June 4th, 2021 at Danbury Memorial Funeral Home (117 South St, Danbury CT 06810) from 6 pm to 8 p.m. Burial to be held on Wednesday June 9th, 2021 at Middletown Veteran's Cemetery at 2 p.m.
