Sandra A. Cantu

     Sandra Angelica Cantú Cortés was born in Santiago, Chile on February 14, 1943.  She grew up in a time when roles and choices laid out for a woman were very clearly and tightly defined. She loved motherhood and even helped to raise her husband’s two youngest sibling alongside her own.  Due to political upheaval and her husband Cesar’s forced exile, she immigrated to the U.S in 1976 after two years of raising her children alone.

      In the U.S., she continued to raise her four children into adulthood and worked full-time; all the while, evolving with her children as they grew, and time progressed.  Sandra, who came from a bygone era, continuously transformed into a modern woman. She is regarded by many women who met her upon arriving to this country, and became part of her family, as a surrogate mother or big sister.  She was widowed in 2020 and will be remembered by her four children and their families: Claudio & Patty with their children Amanda and Miriam, Ivan & Beverly with their children Anneli and Camile, Sandra Lorena & Boris with their children Sofia and Marcela, and Marcelo & Margaret with their children Juliana, Rio, and Elijah. 

     She will also be remembered by Cesar’s four siblings; Jorge, Silvia, Yiya, and Teresa who love her like a sister, her nieces and nephews Andrea, Beatriz, Dante, and Jorge,Jaime, Javier, Carlos, Elisa and Andres and a large and varied troupe of friends whose lives she has touched profoundly: Adriana, Denisse, Ingrid, Kemisis, Nuhad, Rosita, and their families. 

    Sadly, she left this world and those that love her on December 13, 2023.  Her memory and love carry on.
