Ruth O'Hara Obituary

Mrs. Ruth Lois O’Hara (Von der Heide) passed away peacefully on June 11th, 2026 surrounded by family. She was 88 years old.

Ruth was born in Scarsdale, NY on November 1st, 1937 to John T Von der Heide and Florence E. Trautwein. She graduated Cortland State Teachers College in 1959, which led her to meet her husband of almost 65 years, Mitchel J O’Hara. They were married in August of 1961.

As a child, Ruth and her family frequented Mohawk Mountain House. When her own children grew, they visited Lake George which inspired them to search for a body of water closer to home. It was then that they came to know Candlewood Lake.

In 1983 the O’Hara family became the owners of Candlewood East Sailing Center, now known as Candlewood East Marina. She was an integral part of the marina for over 40 years, long past her 2020 retirement. She knew every employee, customer, and member, and was often seen enjoying the scenery with Mitch Sr.

She leaves behind her husband Mitch Sr; two devoted children; Mitch (Lori) O’Hara Jr and Sandra (Michael) Chengeri; grandchildren Michael Chengeri (Kaileigh Rywalt), Brittany (AJ) Slegona, Bridgit (Dylan) Lynch, Michele (Michael) Abate, Rachel (Liam) Barnes, Carolyn O’Hara (Calder Stames), and Erinn O’Hara; and 5 (soon to be 7) great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, her older brothers John, Robert, and Ronald Von der Heide, and cousin Louise Elizabeth “Betty” Trautwein.

Her family is heartbroken by their loss but grateful for the incredible life she lived and the memories she gave them. Her love of family, the lake and bringing people together will continue to inspire them. Although they knew this day would come, their hearts are heavy as they begin to navigate life without her. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral service and burial will be private. A celebration of life to follow at a later date. Danbury Memorial Funeral Home (117 South Street) assisted the family with arrangements. To send the family condolences please visit www.danburymemorial.com.
