Melvin Evuen Obituary

Igho Melvin Evuen, of Danbury, CT, passed away on January 21, 2026. He was 68 years old. Melvin was born on May 3, 1957, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He was born to the late Chief Marquis Nikoro Evuen andthe  late Chief (Mrs) Mary Ebosa Okeh Evuen. Melvin was the eldest of seven siblings, including Stella Evuen, late Gladys Evuen, Andrew Evuen, late Otite Evuen, Ejiroghene Evuen, and Kesiena Evuen.

Melvin left his home at a young age to pursue his studies by way of England, then to Seattle, WA, and finally to Washington, DC, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) from Howard University. Because education was of utmost importance to him, Melvin also later received a Master's in Business from New York University (NYU).

Melvin enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career as an architect, known for his unique ability to envision and create spaces where others could not. He founded IME Building Design Service and built it into a highly respected design and consulting firm, offering full-service project management from design and documentation to permitting and beyond. His work attracted many repeat clients throughout Connecticut and parts of New York, many of whom became close friends. Melvin truly loved his work and took great pride in designing beautiful, thoughtful living spaces.

He will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile, booming laughter, and jovial personality.   Melvin had a deep love for knowledge and current events; he read constantly, always surrounded by newspapers and magazines. No matter how busy life became, he made time to read and stay informed, believing strongly in the importance of expanding the mind.

One of his favorite things to do with his daughters, when they were younger, was to drive around and look at buildings, mostly houses. He would point out various features and explain why the house was built this way or that way, or what he would do if he were to redesign the house. He has upheld this tradition of sharing his passion for architecture and design by showing his grandsons his latest projects, explaining the reasoning behind each design choice, and patiently answering every question.

Beyond his passion for his work, Melvin had a deep curiosity about the world. He delighted in learning about different countries, cultures, and people. If someone captured his interest, he would thoughtfully seek to understand their story in full.  This genuine curiosity allowed him to connect effortlessly with people of all ages and backgrounds. A conversation with Melvin was never just a conversation; you always walked away having learned something new.

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Chanrany; his three daughters, Chankyna, Chanerica, and Chansopine; and his three beloved grandsons, Kyron, Amari, and Phoenix.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 9th at Danbury Memorial Funeral Home (117 South Street) from 9:00-10:15 a.m.
