Maria DeLourdes Pinto Varela

Maria DeLourdes Pinto Varela passed away on December 30, 2020 at Yale New Haven Hospital while surrounded by her three children. Maria was born on January 18, 1959 in
Carquere, Resende, Portugal to Agueda de Jesus Pinto and the late Francisco Joaquim Pinto.

Maria worked for 13 years for Fairfield Processing Inc. in Danbury and many years as a housekeeper and nanny, and was greatly appreciated by the families that became family to her. 

Maria was known by all as an extremely loving, caring and generous woman who cherished time spent with her loved ones, especially her children.  Maria was welcoming to all her children's friends with open arms despite their nationality or backgrounds and she was loved by all of them.  She loved to cook and entertain for her family and friends and there was always extra food in case someone walked in, her door was always opened. Even while she worked two jobs somehow there was always a fresh homemade cooked meal on the table every night.  She loved gardening and had an extraordinary affinity for plants. Her “green thumb” was so impressive that she was able to rescue plants that others had deemed beyond help and was known to be the only one who could bring any flower back to life. In her free time she enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and was an avid animal lover.

Maria was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend.  She will be dearly missed. 

Maria is survived by her recently separated husband John Varela after 41 years, three beloved children; daughter Sandra Varela (Anderson Formiga), daughter Daniela Varela, and son Carlos Varela (Patricia Santos). Three grandchildren; Alijah, Jeramiah, and Jonah. In Portugal, Ten siblings; Maria Monteiro, Maria Pinto Loureiro, Emilia Pinto, Georgina Pinto, Alexandre Pinto, Cristina Pinto, Dalia Pinto, Armindo Pinto, Helena Pinto and João Pinto.  As well as many nieces and nephews overseas. Maria is predeceased by two siblings; Rogerio Pinto and Americo Pinto and father Francisco Joaquim Pinto.

A Private Visitation will be held by the family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday January 7, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (149 Deer Hill Ave, Danbury CT 06810). Due to Covid-19 regulations, the church is only able to admit 32 people.
