Kevin J. Atherton, of New Milford, CT, formerly of Danbury, CT, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2026. He was 75 years old.
Born on November 4, 1950 in Danbury, CT, son of the late Leo and Anna (McCarthy) Atherton.
He moved to New Milford in 1971 and worked at nestles for over 30 years starting in 1975
Kevin was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching games as much as he did playing them. He played in touch football and softball leagues, or he’d be at the park for a pickup game of basketball.
He was a familiar face around town, known for biking or walking everywhere to run errands, shoot pool, or head down to the Green. He often met up with friends at Dunkin’ Donuts to have coffee, talks sports and reminisce. If he saw someone outside where he lived he always stopped to chat or lend a hand.
As a grandfather, he was always ready for the activity or adventure of the day. He simply loved joining in on whatever the kids were doing.
Kevin is survived by his children; Tammy Atherton and Tony (Carey) Atherton; and his grandchildren, Aidan and Tierney. He is also survived by the mother of his children Paula Atherton; his siblings Cheryl (Barry) Hart, Robert Atherton, and Thomas (Carmen) Atherton; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Keith, Vernon, and Brian Atherton.
To honor Kevin’s wishes, a simple cremation was arranged. A private celebration of life will be planned for a later date. Those who wish to honor Kevin’s memory may make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.og. Danbury Memorial Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
