Julian Brix Obituary

Julian J. Brix, of Sandy Hook, CT, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on December 9, 2024. He was 85 years old.

Born on December 3, 1939 in Decatur, IL, son of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Pritz) Brix. Julian graduated from Decatur High School and received a degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University. His career spanned more than 50 years in the electric utility industry serving in executive positions at companies in Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska, and as a board member of Southwest Power Pool, Little Rock, AK.

He was married to the late Sara Jeanette Knierim for 37 years. They raised their family in Jacksonville, IL and Lincoln, NE, where Julian built his career and was active in church and civic organizations. Julian married Kay Kiernan in 2000 and enjoyed nearly 25 years with her living in CT. He was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan and enjoyed reading, wine, model railroads, and spending time with family during his retirement.

Music was a central theme throughout his life. The son of a church organist, he sang and directed church choirs and had a deep love of pipe organ music. He developed a passion for jazz music during college, taking the train to clubs in downtown Chicago. His favorite artist was Dave Brubeck and his family will never hear “Take Five” without thinking of him. Julian also enjoyed traveling in Europe and to US national parks, and in his younger years camping and spending time on the lake in Wisconsin.

In addition to his wife Kay Brix, he is survived by his children Laura Newbury and her husband Chris; Leslie Miner; and Garry Brix and his wife Amy; his grandchildren Jack, Sam, Emma, and Leo Brix; his brother Alan Brix and his wife Caryl; his sister-in-law Janice Brix; his stepsons Trey, Ted, and Ryan Kiernan and their families; and many dear nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Brix, son-in-law Larry Miner, and stepson Scott Kiernan.
