Joao (John) Manuel Sousa of Danbury, CT, passed away in the comfort of his own home on Monday April 20, 2026. He was 54 years old.
Born on August 20, 1971 in Matosinhos, Porto, Portugal, son of the late Manuel F. and Maria C. Sousa. Joao graduated from Henry Abbott Technical High School in 1992. On September 21, 1996 Joao married the love of his life Jill. Together they raised their two daughters and enjoyed over 30 years together.
John was known around town as the "car god" - there was no job he couldn't do. His friends and family knew they could always come to him with any issue, and he would be there to help. Over the years, countless projects filled the backyard- cars, bikes, trucks, scooters, and anything with a motor. John took great pride in being able to fix and restore so much for so many.
He also enjoyed tinkering with projects around the house, always finding something to improve or rebuild. One of his greatest joys was taking his girls on rides on his Harley. Among those cherished memories were two special trips to Daytona bike week. John spent many summer days with friends cruising on the open road, feeling most at home on his Harley.
Above all, John loved his family. The light of his life was his girls, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever- from bike week trips to cheer competitions and sporting events. He loves having family and friends gathered together, whether it was playing "Name that Tune" or simply sitting by the firepit.
John's legacy of generosity, skill, and love will remain with all who knew him.
John will be missed by many but especially his wife; Jill; his daughters; Samantha O. Sousa (Jose Rodriguez) and Katheryn M. Sousa, his siblings; Jose Sousa (Elizabeth) and Diamantina Sousa, his nieces and nephews; Jose Jr, Matthew, Isabelle and Manuel, his brother and sister in laws: Jim and Karen Gay and Joy and Fred Steinmiller, and countless cousins and friends.
A Celebration of life gathering will be held on Thursday April 23, 2026 at Danbury Memorial Funeral Home from 10am-12:30pm. A graveside service will immediately follow at Wooster Cemetery (20 Ellsworth Avenue) at 1pm.
