Jesse Edwards Obituary

Jesse Antonio Edwards passed away on Thursday, February 15th, 2024, at Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, CT. He was 37 years old. Jesse was born on October 4th, 1986, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Glenniss Edwards and Eglon Gilkes.

Jesse was the second born of Glenniss’ four children and Eglon’s only child. Jesse attended P.S. 181, Walt Whitman Middle School (M.S. 246) and later furthered his education at Erasmus High School. In 2004, Glenniss moved Jesse and his siblings to Waterbury, CT to be closer to his maternal grandmother, uncles and aunt who at that time resided in Danbury, CT.

Throughout his life, Jesse held employment in retail, as a machine operator, as a screen printer and later as a school bus monitor for First Student, Inc. in Bristol, CT and as a driver with Lyft. “Any man can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a dad” and Jesse was just that. His greatest joy in life was his children and he loved all three of them dearly. The role of dad is what was most important to him.

Jesse, often known as “Jay,” was a caring son, grandson, brother, father, fiancé, uncle, overall family member and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, making and listening to music, dancing, playing video games, fishing, swimming, riding bicycles and motorcycles and watching his favorite shows and movies on television. Jesse loved watching and playing sports, particularly basketball. He took pride in attending his son Jerami’s games and cheering him on from the sidelines. He also enjoyed ping pong, pool, bowling and darts.  He was a car, technology and sneaker enthusiast. Jesse loved animals, particularly dogs. As a child, he would bring home different types of animals to try to convince his mother and maternal grandmother to allow him to keep them as pets. Jesse lived life to the fullest and was always planning the next activity for himself and his family. He enjoyed going to concerts, to the movies and shopping. Jesse was an epicure. He loved cooking and was always looking for a new recipe to try. He was always on the hunt to discover new restaurants with different cuisines. Jesse loved fashion, colognes and jewelry. He took pride in his appearance and that of his children. He was very stylish. He was always color-coordinated and dressed to the nines even on a regular day. Jesse was a friendly, kind-hearted and humble person with radiant energy and a big heart. He always had a big smile on his face that could light up the room. When he stepped into a room, all eyes were on him because it was apparent how special he was. Jesse was a very social person and people gravitated towards him. He was always willing to help and/or give advice.

Jesse was preceded in death by his great-grandmother: Cynthia Edwards, his grandmothers: Greta Edwards and Sylvia Gibson, his mother: Glenniss Edwards and his niece: Jamiyah Edwards.

Jesse is survived by his fiancé: Ashley DeJesus. His three beloved children: Dominique Davis, Jerami Edwards and Julius Edwards. His siblings: David Edwards (Alicia), John Gilkes (Daisy) and Jamar Edwards. His uncles: Roderick Edwards (Alexandra), Anthony Edwards and Kevin Gibson. His aunts: Sophia Gilkes, Michelle Hawkins and Nicole Hayes. His great-grand aunt: Rita Small. His great-aunts and great-uncles: Terence Boyce (Sheila), James Edwards (Cathy - Godmother), Barbara Boyce (Euclid), Ventrice Edwards and Beverley Edwards. His nephew: Jayden Locke. His nieces: Aamani Locke, Atalia Locke, Amirah Locke and Jamari Edwards. Many cousins including Ashleigh Edwards, Nadine Edwards, Tracy Watson (Julian) and Terence Boyce, Jr. and countless friends that he viewed as family including Mikey Rodriguez, Ian Fryer and Jeremy Hoskie.

Jesse’s departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply. He is gone too soon and will be missed but never forgotten.
