Howard J. “Scotty” Long
Howard J. Long, of Newtown, CT, died peacefully with his family by his side on June 25, 2024 at Danbury Hospital. He was 82 years old.
Born on October 26, 1941 in Bronx, NY, son of the late Howard J. and Catherine (Hetherson) Long. Howard honorably served in the US Army between 1959-1961 being stationed in Germany. Howard grew up in an Irish neighborhood in the Chelsea District of New York City, but despite being surrounded by all Irish friends that did not stop him from loving his Scottishheritage that he learned from his beloved grandmother Mary Ann (Mitchell) Long.
As a young man Scotty spent his summer months at the family’s Bungalow in nearby Connecticut where he befriended a man named Larry Meyer who would go on to become his very dear, lifelong friend. Larry happened to have a sister, Gloria. Once introduced, Howard and Gloria became inseparable and married on September 29, 1962. They shared many wonderful years together.
Howie worked as a teamster with New England Teamster and Trucking Industry before retiring and taking on a new role with Mannkind Corporation in Danbury. He enjoyed his many hobbies; playing cards, making jigsaw puzzles and he had a love of history, he enjoyed reading about history, watching movies about the military and building military models. He was an avid NY Jets and Yankee fan. But what Howard was most known for, to all who knew him, was his amazing sense of humor and the repertoire of jokes he had and shared with everyone, whether you wanted to hear them or not. He could make anyone smile. He cared deeply about others and always made friends wherever he went. He liked to say that “a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.” No one was a stranger for long when Howie was around.
Howard is not only survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Gloria, but also his children; Scott Long and his wife Cheryl, Tracy Giroux and her husband Ronald, Rob Long and his longtime partner Michelle, his grandchildren; Megan Clavie-Parker, Jessica Manning, Austin Giroux, Joshua Giroux, Eric Long and Heather Long, his one great grandson; Mason Manning, his brother David Long, many cousins including his close cousins Lorraine Konzelmann and Nancy Long and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Judy O’Brien and MaryLou Parkhurst, brothers Joseph and Nicolas and his beloved grandmother who meant the world to him, Mary Ann.
A celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday June 29, 2024 from 11am-12:30 pm with a service beginning at 12:30pm at Danbury Memorial Funeral Home (117 South Street, Danbury, CT).
