Harry “Rick Shaw” Ferriol, 78, passed away January 5, 2026 at Danbury Hospital, Danbury, Connecticut. He was born July 23,1947 to Lucy Lombardi and Harry Ferriol at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Rick was a long-time resident of New Jersey and grew up in Harrison, where he graduated from Harrison High School. Afterwards, he served in the United States Army.
Throughout his life, Rick’s lifelong dream was to play guitar and sing in a band. After working with various musicians, his dream was fulfilled in the 1970s with the formation of “Rick Shaw and Freedom”.
“Rick Shaw and Freedom” became one of New Jersey’s best loved and respected bands. As a lead member, Rick created an unmistakable sound that connected with people and drew them to the dance floor. His legacy continues to endure through his deep love of music, and his lasting impact on those who came to know him.
Rick was predeceased by his sisters, Mickie and Marie. He is survived by his partner, Kathryn Sharkis of New Fairfield, Connecticut, and by his children, Eric and Christina Ferriol of New Jersey.
He will be deeply missed by all who experienced his music and shared in his life.
