Greta Deanna Edwards

Greta Deanna Edwards passed away peacefully on May 24, 2018 at  Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut, while surrounded by her loving family.  

Greta was born on December 12, 1944 in Barbados, West Indies, to the late Cynthia and Cuthbert Edwards.  She first attended Catholic High School and later transferred to the Federal High School in Barbados.

In 1968, Greta moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she started her career caring for children and this love for children stayed with her throughout her lifetime. She worked in the food industry for a number of years at Service Systems and New York Telephone.

In 1998, Greta moved to Connecticut and joined her son in Danbury. She received her CNA certificate and worked for Pope John Paul II Nursing Home until her retirement.

Greta, often known as “Sis” or “Sissy”, was a caring mother and grandmother. She loved to travel and enjoyed weekend getaways with Norris (now deceased) and often took trips back to Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. “Sis” also loved to cook and on Saturdays her home was the gathering place for many family and friends. Sis would call her ninety-four year old Aunt Rita twice daily to make sure she took her medications.   After her traveling was restricted, she remained in close contact with many of her friends especially her best friend “Kitch”.

Sis loved politics and the weather and was considered the family meteorologist. If you needed to know about the weather patterns you called her.  An avid bird watcher, she also adored caring for her pet birds. She recognized the need for education in order to succeed in life and celebrated high school, undergraduate and graduate programs with her children and grand-children.  

Greta was the second oldest of seven children. She is survived by her Aunt Rita Small and siblings Terence Boyce (Sheila), Patrick Edwards (Ena), James Edwards (Cathy), Barbara Boyce (Euclid), Ventrice Edwards and Beverly Edwards.  

Greta is survived by her four beloved children; Pamela, Rod, Anthony and Nicole.  Six grand-children: David, Jesse, Ashleigh, John, Nadine and Jamar. Five great grand-children: Dominique, Jayden, Jerami, Amani and Atalia. Nieces: Wendy, Tracy, Nikita, Jan.  Nephews: Terence Jr., Marlon, Marc, Kemar and many cousins including Hallam and Cheryl.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Friday June 1, 2018 at New Hope Baptist Church in Danbury, CT from 10 to 11 a.m., with a prayer service to begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery in Danbury, CT.
