Deacon George E. Smith, age 72, of Waterbury, Connecticut, beloved husband of Sarah L. Smith, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by his family. Born on June 26, 1953, in Bethel, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Eldner and Lucy Council Smith.
A devoted member of Restoration Springs Ministries in Waterbury, George was deeply respected for his unwavering faith and commitment to his church and community. Receiving an education in Danbury, Connecticut, George then became dedicated and devoted to many years of service as a flagger with AWP Road Construction Company.
George had a lifelong passion for antique cars, took pride in his well-dressed appearance, and enjoyed collecting baseball caps. Above all, he cherished his family.
In addition to his loving wife of 36 years, he is survived by his sister, Mattie Faye Dickens (Jessie), and Launia Brown, both of Danbury, Connecticut; his daughter, Karrie Moore (Shaquan) and her family of Waterbury; his sons, Jamaine Stewart of Waterbury and Maceo Phoenix of Danbury; his daughters, Tamesha DeWolf (Andrew) and Tiffany Wheeler, both of Buffalo, New York; and his son, Derrick Wheeler of Hartford, Connecticut.
George leaves behind a legacy of love through his many grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and his son, Ernest Williams. He is now reunited with them in eternal peace.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday July 25, 2025 at 11am at 1575 Thomaston Avenue, UNIT 4, Waterbury, CT. Repass will immediately follow at Gratefully Elite,1575 Thomaston Ave UNIT 8, Waterbury, CT 06704.
