Edward Nugent, Jr. Obituary

Edward Joseph Nugent Jr., of Newtown, CT, (formerly of Sarasota, FL and Bethel, CT) passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, February 7, 2025.  He was 90 years old.

Born on January 21, 1935 in Yonkers, NY, son of the late Edward Joseph Sr. and Muriel (Reilly) Nugent.  Edward graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, NY.  He continued his education at Iona College receiving his Bachelor’s Degree. He also attended Brown University.  He honorably served in the US Navy on the USS Pursuit.

On July 7, 1962 he married the love of his life, Marie Cubello.  Together they created a life full of love and laughter for 62 years.  Edward was in banking his entire career, starting at The Bank of New York, then at CenterBank for many years before his early retirement.  Mid retirement he decided to go back for his second career as President of Western Connecticut Federal Credit Union before officially retiring again.  Ed and Marie moved to Sarasota, Florida first as snowbirds in 1996 and then permanently in 1998.  He made wonderful friends there and often spoke of his lunches with the guys.  He returned to Connecticut in 2021 to be closer to most of his kids and grandchildren.  He finally settled back in Newtown and was so happy in his new community that he and Marie could live out the rest of their days.

Ed enjoyed golf, fishing and most especially time with his kids, grandkids and great grandson.  He was a loyal fan of the Giants, Mets and UConn basketball teams.  He was an avid reader, loved talking history and politics with both sides. He always loved a great one on one conversation and gave the best advice.  And those who knew him well, know how he took great pleasure in busting  chops.  He was an amazing cook in his earlier years.  His family remembers many feasts during Cape Cod vacations and no one cooked a better Sunday breakfast for family get togethers.  He was a planner and always 10 steps ahead of everyone… figuring out and worrying about every possible scenario in any situation.  He was the rock of both his immediate and extended family and will be so incredibly missed by all that loved him.

Edward is not only survived by his loving wife Marie but also his children; Edward III (Kate); David (Monika); Kathleen  and J.T. (Amanda).  As well as 10 grandchildren Abigail, David Jr. Daniel, Kiley, Miranda, Caleb, Kate, Jack, Aidan and Avery.  And he was recently blessed with his first great grandson, Crew Coady.  He is also survived by his only sister, Muriel Galda.

He was predeceased by his parents; Edward Sr. and Muriel and his two brothers Jack and Peter; and his first child, Donna Lynn who passed in 1967 at the age of 4 ½.
