Cesar Cantu Salazar Obituary

On Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, Cesar Osvaldo Cantu, 81, a caring husband, brother, father, uncle, and grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Cesar was born November 25th, 1938 in Santiago, Chile.

He was the second of 6 siblings, and he leaves behind his brother Jorge and his wife Lucia, Silvia, Teresa, and her husband Mauricio, and Edith to join his parents Manuel and Maria Hortencia, his in-laws Hugo and Elsa, older brother Manuel and brother-in-law Antero. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra Angelica Cantu, and his four children, Claudio and his wife Patricia, Ivan and his wife Beverly, Sandra Lorena and her husband Boris, and Marcelo and his wife Margaret.

Cesar immigrated to the United States in 1974 as a political refugee and settled in White Plains, New York. He frequently visited family in Chile, serving as a bridge between cultures and borders for a family separated by land, sea, and language. Cesar often captivated his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews with stories of Chile and memories of family. With his video camera, Cesar recorded moments both significant and mundane, which allowed all of his loved ones to enjoy each other’s smiles, despite the time and space between them. Above all else, Cesar valued family and community, and as his legacy, he leaves behind people around the world who will miss his laughter, jokes, home movies, and love.

To celebrate the life of our beloved Cesar O. Cantu, we invite everyone to raise a glass of Chilean vino tinto, and share stories of the man who impacted the lives of so many.
