With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ann Elisabeth Lunde on March 10, 2025 after a period of declining health.
Ann was born on March 19,1941 at the French Hospital in New York City and raised in Bayside, N.Y. where she attended local schools. Ann’s birthplace foreshadowed her lifelong love of French language and culture. Ann graduated from the University of Michigan as a French major and became a French teacher. She met and married Rolf Lunde in 1965, settled in Armonk, N.Y., and together created a loving family.
Ann’s skills and gifts best shone as Mother to their five children. She raised them with love, encouragement, faith, and plenty of Scandinavian food and traditions, especially at Christmas. Ann poured her heart and soul into her family and considered it pure joy to watch her children and grandchildren succeed. Ann’s home was one of love and laughter. The commercial grade coffeepot was always on and there was always room for more at her table. Friends became family over her beloved mashed potatoes and homemade jam. All were welcome.
Ann had a thirst for knowledge and often read several books simultaneously. To describe her as an avid reader is an understatement. A lover of language in all forms, Ann spoke five languages. She even mastered texting and the art of a well chosen emoji (or 20) to keep pace with her beloved grandchildren, sending encouragement and unconditional love. Throughout her life, Ann was always encouraging, playful, enthusiastic, and curious. Generous of spirit, Ann was a cheerful giver who loved to give (and receive) thoughtful gifts. She truly embodied 2 Corinthians 9:6-7.
A constant throughout Ann’s life was her love for Vinalhaven, Maine. From childhood visits to her grandparents Henning and Anna Larson, school breaks and summers with her children and grandchildren, to finally moving to the island full time in retirement; the delight and longing of her heart was always for Vinalhaven.
Ann was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Louise Melin; her husband Rolf Magne Lunde; her son in law Delwyn “Gus” Radley; and her beloved bulldog Ginger.
Ann is survived by her five children and twelve grandchildren: Rolf Lunde; Jane (Doug) Brady, Maren, Annika, Walter, Elias, and Charles “CJ” Brady; Kirsten (Tim) Bonn, Karolina, Matthew, Annelise, and Timothy Bonn; Nils (Tara) Lunde, Oliver, and Maura Lunde; Britt (Gus) Radley, Myles Radley; sister Helen Meline; nieces, nephews, and extended family; many friends whom she loved as family; and her faithful dog Max.
Above all, Ann’s life was defined by sharing the joy of the Lord. Singing in the choir at Hillside Church, sharing truths from her Bible reading, insights from her devotionals - her lifelong desire was to know God and spread His word. Matthew 25:23 says “His lord said to him “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord”
A memorial service will be held on Vinalhaven at a later date.
